Young became the first American to win
three winter Olympic medals when she captured a bronze medal in the
1000-meter speed-skating event at Darvos, Switzerland. In the previous
two days, Young had finished first in the 500-meter speed-skating event
and second in the 1500-meter speed-skating event.
