Russell A. Alger is born in Ohio.

Orphaned at the age of nine, Alger settled in Grand Rapids in 1860. Over the next forty years, he served the state and the nation as a Civil War general, millionaire lumberman, governor of Michigan and secretary of war during the Spanish American War.
