A graduate of Yale University, Potter
Stewart served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. During the
mid-1950s he served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th
Circuit. In October 1958, Stewart was nominated to the Supreme Court by
President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He retired on July 3, 1981, and was
replaced by Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman to serve on the court.
Justice Stewart died on December 7, 1985, and is buried in Arlington
National Cemetery.
