| Former slaves petition the state
legislature for a church. |

Thirteen escaped or freed slaves petition
the legislature to start a church. Their efforts lead to the formation
of the Second Baptist Church--the first African American church in
Detroit. Its members met in various halls and schools until 1857, when
the group purchased the Zion Reformed Evangelical Church on the site of
the present Second Baptist Church.
